Hyper–sur–real

The title “Hyper–sur–real” has been chosen to describe two distinct yet conceptually related bodies of work by Susanne Kühn and Vittorio Santoro that will be shown at this year's paper positions berlin.

Kühn’s works on paper present layered constellations of marks and motifs that coexist without conforming to a single formal or narrative structure. Her compositions unfold as complex visual fields in which disparate elements overlap and interact. The effect is akin to a microscopic examination of fabric: the viewer encounters a meticulous, almost forensic attention to structure, texture, and surface, revealing intricate systems that resist linear interpretation.

Santoro’s time-based text works on paper operate with a similarly meticulous precision, yet through language rather than image. His works respond to the “symgraphic” signals of everyday life—absorbing and reflecting inputs from diverse social, political, and cultural contexts. Through temporal structures and textual interventions, Santoro transforms ordinary phenomena into layered conceptual investigations.

Under the umbrella of “Hyper–sur–real,” both artists extend the logic of the surreal beyond dream imagery toward intensified perception—whether of visual materiality or of lived experience—foregrounding complexity, fragmentation, and heightened attentiveness to the structures that shape reality.
